COE Cheetahs Win 3rd Place in Battle of the Bluebonnets!

The COE Battle of the Bluebonnets team took home 3rd place yesterday after a heated competition!  Our team of 5 reading rock stars, led by their coach Mrs. Collings, actually tied for first place with three other schools- several tie breaker questions were needed to settle the competition. In the end we brought home 3rd place medals- our highest finish yet!
Our team practiced well and worked together as a team- and it paid off.  If you see Mrs. Collings or one of these students, be sure to congratulate them on their accomplishment!

Inquiring Minds Want to Know: Why do We Learn Spanish?

At COE, have lots of curious kids who ask great questions.  Our Wonder Box gives students a place to ask all those burning questions!  We are really lucky to have an awesome crew of 5th grade students who work on our daily broadcast. The KCOE News Special Reporters take on the task of researching and reporting on as many of those questions as they can.  Recently, they answered the question, "Why do we learn Spanish?"  Our reporters scheduled an interview with our Spanish teacher, Mrs. Imperial, to learn the answer.  Check out their video report*- not only will you learn all the reasons why we learn Spanish, but I think you'll agree that we have some great student news reporters and producers!

*On the video, we report that we are an IB school. Chandler Oaks is a candidate school for the Primary Years Programme. This school is pursuing authorization as an IB World School. These are schools that share a common philosophy - a commitment to high quality, challenging, international education that Chandler Oaks Elementary believes is important for our students.

2nd Grade Uses Smart Board in Who We Are Unit

Mrs. Koester and Mrs. Van Curan used the Smart board in the village to help teach their Who We Are unit.  After a discussion about inherited traits, learned behaviors and instincts, students came to the smart board and sorted some traits into the proper category and explained their thinking. Students are developing an understanding of the central idea "Humans manifest their common characteristics differently."

Teachers Tackle the Tech Challene

Even before school began, Chandler Oaks teachers were hard at work!  Teams of teachers banded together for a friendly competition in stretching their tech skills.  If your son or daughter comes home talking about wikis, wordles, and vokis, it's not another language - their teacher is using some cutting edge tech tools to help our students be engaged in learning and develop higher level thinking skills!  We are committed to developing those 21st century skills!
