But at COES, Mrs Lanahan is helping students to push the creative envelope. Encouraging students to be creative by combining photoshop elements and traditional art resulted in some really interesting pieces of artwork. Students took digital photos of themselves, which were then altered using photoshop to create a video game character. The final digital character was placed in a setting created with traditional paint and mixed media. It’s not just the older students that are having fun with technology. 2nd graders have also explored a variety of digital self portraits using a variety of tools in tux paint. Even younger students in Kindergarten have been learning about the wide variety of fonts that can be used to make their name and describing words look like art by using a simple word document. Art is always about creativity but using technology to develop that creativity is not limited just to the art itself. Most recently, Mrs Lanahan was using a google hangout to share her skill with the potters wheel with collaboration of Angie Bell and her artists at Forest North Elementary. Students from another school watched her throw a clay bowl using the potters wheel and FNE students were able to get their questions answered in real time. Way better than just a movie. The clay pots were then decorated and sold at the Empty Bowl Fundraiser to help local families in need. Mrs Lanahan is also responsible for the Techno Art club where students have made stop motion movies using frames, powerpoint and digital cameras.
The software allows them to color the blocks, to move the blocks around, to separate and regroup the blocks and to show them with or without labelled columns. Practice makes perfect… and when the practice is engaging, it’s much easier to become a great math student. This will be an ongoing project so watch for more on this in upcoming weeks.

<span style="font-family: "KG Miss Kindergarten"; font-size: 10.0pt;">First
Grade has been learning about personal and cultural events in their “Who We
Are” unit. Throughout the unit of inquiry, students examined the personal and
cultural events of families. Through comparison, students also explored customs and celebrations in each other’s families and
families around the world.

Various learning experiences helped the
students make connections to gain intercultural understanding and respect. Here
are a few of the wonderful opportunities the students had the opportunity to
engage in:

Third graders at COES elementary school rock! Their poetry
slam on Thursday evening was amazing.
After studying poetry in music and the regular classroom, they performed
a wide range of poetry for parents and teachers. Each class set up their own “Poetry Café”
. Poetry recited included everything
from their own poetry, limericks and funny rhymes to the classics and even included a selection from
Hamlet. Each grade had their own MC who
kept the show moving with some adlibs and a lot of laughter and fun. Parents and
students enjoyed the performances and the cozy atmosphere with plenty of hot
chocolate. A Spanish song sung by all
participants rounded off the evening in each poetry café proving there are no
limits to this group of international learners.

So it's hardly surprising that our students (and the parent volunteers) had so much fun at the "Hour of Coding" event on Monday. As educators, we know that we want our students to learn how to think logically, how to solve problems and how to stick with a project until they are finished without simply giving up because it's too hard. During the Hour of Code activities, students developed those very skills while playing computer games. They had to figure out how to make the Angry Bird get through the maze to the pig or they had work out how to allow the zombie to get to the sunflower despite the obstacles in his path. If they didn't get it right, they simply had to "debug" their program and run it again. And they kept at it until they got it right. They worked together, helping each other and in pairs when necessary. In fact, they were having so much fun that our "Hour of Code" turned into more than an hour... and many of the students were making plans to continue at home.

Anyone can access the Hour of code.org activities and have fun learning the basic concepts. We're hoping that there will be enough interest to start a technology club after the Winter Break.

Students can still sign up through the link on the COES website for the Thursday event.
Not an easy task for even the most experienced of teachers!!!!

Mrs. Walker's 5th graders at COES today jumped right in using their Samsung Notes and an app callled Lightbot One Hour coding. There are lots of programs and apps out there that will help to make this easier but Mrs. Walker's behind the scenes research in deciding which one to select paid off. It seems that the students really enjoyed the chance to make a robot walk around, turn corners and jump up and down steps. While playing, they were learning some important concepts. A computer will only do what it is told to do, and you cannot skip a single step or instruction if you want it to work well. Paying attention to details and thinking a problem through from start to finish are definitely skills we want our students to develop... and judging by their engagement, it seems like a little time for fun is just the way to get started. They are learning how the past has influenced the present by using computers to view photos of medical and other equipment from the 19th and 20th Centuries. Working together in small groups, they are able to talk about the old fashioned equipment and compare it with the tools and technology of today and realize that what we have today has evolved from the things that were used in the past.
Students learned about a variety of in-demand careers on the broadcast, took interest inventories and explored different career choices in the library, and listened to a variety of speakers share about what they do. Many parents gave their time to help our students learn more about some of the different jobs and fields that are available and they talked about how what they learned in school prepared them for their jobs today. Students even came to school dressed as what they want to be when they grow up- bankers, fire fighters, teachers, scientists, police officers, business professionals, athletes and artists were a few of the careers represented. It was a great day to help our students start thinking, planning and dreaming about their futures!
Their central idea was work happens when a force causes change. Students were challenged with creating something that would solve a problem or make life easier. Students had to address the work that would happen and the energy needed to help solve the problem or make work easier. Students could present their creation using any format they chose.
Check out a couple of samples from Ms. Olson's class. These students used Padlet, an online bulletin board, to organize their ideas. Students really exercised their creativity and came up with some pretty innovative ideas!
Each morning, a team of students reports to the broadcast studio to write, rehearse, and produce the daily news show that is delivered to all students.

Students report to the broadcast room early each morning to update the script with current events, weather, lunch menu, pledges, art and other special segments. Those same students also produce most of the special reports such as Wonder Box Wednesday, where student reporters research questions submitted by other COE students and report the findings.

Student broadcasters learn communication skills, how to work flexibly on a team and the ins and out of the technology tools used to produce the KCOE news show. Students get to rotate through a variety of roles such as anchor, engineer, director and special reporter and learn more about some of the duties and skills needed in the broadcast industry. They learn a lot, but it is also a lot of fun!
The inquired into the central idea Using and conserving resources alters our relationships with communities and environments. To show their understanding at the end of the unit, students were given the real world task of creating a "Green City" that would run entirely on alternative energy. In their presentation, students had to discuss the impact on the community and environment as well as the conditions that must be necessary for the alternative energy forms to successfully power the city. They have been doing Six Traits review and revising/editing review in rotations. Students are reminded of how much they have learned throughout the year in writing workshop. They've come a long way and made so much progress as writers! Students are applying their writing skills to develop great ideas, using ba-da-bings to explode the moment, and covering their drafts with colorful revision and editing marks. We are so proud of all our writers!
Our team of 5 reading rock stars, led by their coach Mrs. Collings, actually tied for first place with three other schools- several tie breaker questions were needed to settle the competition. In the end we brought home 3rd place medals- our highest finish yet!
Our team practiced well and worked together as a team- and it paid off. If you see Mrs. Collings or one of these students, be sure to congratulate them on their accomplishment!
Students uploaded their photo into Phrase.it and wrote a speech bubble of who they wanted to be like and why. It is evident that this unit get students thinking about how they can use what they learned from others to make good choices today! First they tried their hand at programming using the game LightBot. This helped build their understanding of using step by step, specific instructions for their robots. Next, they began building their robots using Lego WeDo kits. Groups of students selected a project to build and followed Lego's schematics to put it together. It wasn't always easy! Finally, they programmed their robots to each do a different action. Check out the pictures and videos below. You'll see a hungry alligator, twirling birds, a sleeping giant get raised by a crane and flying airplanes. Pretty incredible- and they are only 3rd graders! I can't wait to see the things they can accomplish when they set their minds on something!
Movenote lets students combine photos or documents with video so they can talk about their work. This is an awesome tool to use to encourage reflection, fluency, presenting and sharing! But it's not really about the tool, it's about all the great learning that is taking place when students use it! Check out these examples to see COES students hard at work sharing their learning!
They took notes on each region as then went. Students used Padlet, an online bulletin board tool, to collect their notes and thoughts. As an assessment, they created a postcard on a Google Drawing and wrote a letter about their favorite region, using facts and details to back up their reasons. Stony Point High School Ambassadors recently came to visit COE 5th grade students. They talked about the Academy Program as well as what the IB looks like in high school. This was one of our activities for Education. Go Get It Week. Throughout the week, students learned about a variety of colleges and careers as well as the skills and knowledge that are necessary to be successful. The Stony Point students were a high point for our 5th grade. They talked about what a typical day was like, what they needed to do to be successful in school and how they say their education preparing them for their future. Students got to ask a lot of really great questions and were excited about the opportunities that lay ahead of them in the next few years!
