1st Grade Poetry

First grade students have been publishing their poetry!  Students have been inquiring into various kinds of poetry, including acrostics and poems with alliteration.  After students brainstormed their ideas, they used Power Point to create their Acrostic Poems and Word to publish their alliteration poems.

4th grade Showcases their Knowledge of Matter

After investigating the properties of  matter, students demonstrated their understanding by finding examples that highlighted the different properties around the building. They used digital cameras to take pictures and then uploaded them to the laptops. Groups then created a PowerPoint to explain what they observed about matter around the school.

Second Grade Responds to Problems

Second grade students have been investigating the central idea "Societies respond to problems with action" during their How We Organize Ourselves unit.  One problem that is current to our students is safety!  We recently wrapped up two weeks of safety reminders.  Second grade took the opportunity to teach us about the problems we face at the crosswalks and how to do it safely.  They researched the problem, then decided how they would take action. Students in Mrs. Koester's class decided to make a Power Point and Ms. Birrell's and Ms. Kenisell's classes made public service announcement videos.  2nd grade presented at the assembly this morning to help other students make safe choices.  Check out their work below!

The Crosswalk Problem

5th Grade Investigates: What Makes Us Green?

5th grade recently took on the task of inquiring about what makes COE a green school.  Students at Caldwell Heights (also an IB candidate school) were in their Sharing the Planet unit and wanted to know what made our school so "green." 

We had some ideas, but we didn't know all the answers.  We invited the architects and builders that constructed our school to come talk to us about some of the green features. 

We were blown away!  There are so many things that help make our building environmentally friendly.  Students organized the information into a Power Point presentation so we could share it with Caldwell.  We set up a Skype conference and were able to share what we learned and answer their questions.  Check out what we learned in the slide show below!

4th Grade Students Study Their Heritage

Fourth grade students recently wrapped up their Where We Are in Place and Time IB unit.  Students studied the central idea, “Sharing personal histories fosters intercultural connectedness.” by interviewing a classmate and then presenting on their similarities and differences. Students presented in a variety of ways including posters and Power Point presentations. Students learned that be learning about our own heritage as well as others' heritage, we become more open-minded.  We can find things we all have in common and celebrate our differences.
